About Elisabetin, in brief

Elisabetin suits people who want Timișoara at a walking pace and are willing to trade a corner shop for a promenade. The quarter is the city's old villa belt, laid out from the 1870s south of the centre across what had been market gardens and orchards. It kept the plot sizes. Most streets are one carriageway wide, lined with plane trees and horse chestnuts, and the buildings are one or two storeys with plaster mouldings, wooden shutters and small front gardens. If you are booking for two or three nights and your main business is in Piața Victoriei, Piața Unirii or the Fabric district, Elisabetin is a straightforward fifteen to twenty minute walk from all of them, and the walk is pleasant rather than a trudge past filling stations. You come back in the evening through Parcul Rozelor, which is a rose garden in June and a quiet, well-lit park the rest of the year, and you sleep where the loudest thing after ten o'clock is usually a tram on the ring road, not a bar.

Elisabetin's main advantage is that the centre is walkable and the walk is short. From the middle of the district, around Strada Mihai Viteazul or the north end of Bulevardul 16 Decembrie 1989, it is fifteen minutes on foot to Piața Victoriei and twenty to Piața Unirii. The route goes north through Parcul Rozelor, across the Bega on the footbridge by the Radisson, and you are in the centre. From the district's southern edge, near Calea Șagului, add five to seven minutes. This is a genuine walk, not a pavement-less slog: the crossings are marked and the streets are lit.

Good to know before you book

Cobbles are the usual surprise in the centre: wheeled cases rattle and heels suffer. Most museums close on Monday. Terraces take cards; the markets and the bakeries prefer cash.
